Re Artisans of Splendent Vale: The “rubber” versions of the main character meeples are actually erasers. Each character has their own pencil, and each character has their own eraser. (Whether you want to “ruin” the eraser by using it for that purpose is, of course, your own choice.)
Also, regarding the rulebook not being the best, I have a pinned post on the Board Game Geek forum for the game with Errata and FAQs. This summarizes questions and answers from Nikki from the whole forum for the game.

And thanks for the tip on the BGG link. We haven’t encountered any major issues, but if we need some clarification on something, I will make sure to jump in there. My comment stemmed more from the learning of the rules and I wasn’t a big fan of the progression through. Felt a little bulky to learn. But we have been mostly fine ever since.
